PSU->PCI-E Cable

Question for any electrical or electronics engineers: When I built new psu cables for my rig, I was surprised that the difference between 8-pin and 6-pin PCI-E cables was 2 black wires. I would have thought it would have been an additional yellow wire (+12v) and an additional black wire (gnd).

My experience with ham radio hasn't helped me figure out the advantage of adding to just one side of the circuit like this. Does it allow the gpu to pull more current from the buss?
